Your first massage: common fears and what actually happens
Updated:
In short
You do not need to know in advance which service to pick, and you do not undress completely: only the area being worked on is uncovered, and the rest stays covered. The session starts with a short chat, and you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any moment. If you are unsure, a relaxing session is a calm place to begin.
Myth: I will have to undress completely and feel exposed
Reality: On the table, only the area being worked on at that moment is uncovered. The rest of your body stays covered. You are not fully uncovered at any point in the session, and if something feels uncomfortable, tell your therapist at the very beginning. The therapist will take it into account and adapt the session.
Myth: massage has to hurt to work
Reality: There is no rule that a good massage must be painful. We set the pressure together: at the start we ask what feels comfortable, and during the session you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure whenever you like. A massage where you grit your teeth is not an endurance test, least of all on a first visit. According to Harvard Health, massage does not have to be painful to be therapeutic, so it helps to tell your therapist the kind of touch you prefer, lighter or firmer.
Myth: I am not allowed to speak up during the session
Reality: You are, and it helps us. Say at any moment that the pressure is too strong or too light, that you are cold, or that you need a pause. You can also stay quiet if you prefer. The session begins with a short talk about your health and what you would like, and the conversation stays open from there. If you have a health condition, tell your therapist. If you are unsure whether massage suits you, that is fine. Talk to your doctor before booking.
Myth: I need to know exactly which service to choose
Reality: You do not. If you are unsure, start with a relaxing session such as Balinese massage. The Choose by need pages group services by what you are looking for. You will arrive at a calm studio in Botanica, Bd. Decebal 99C, open Monday to Friday 9:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 18:00. Results vary from person to person and we cannot guarantee a specific result. According to NCCIH, if you are unsure whether massage is appropriate for you, discuss your concerns with your health care provider.
